Modoc Cypress problems — and how to fix them
Modoc Cypress (Cupressus bakeri) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Cypress canker (Seiridium cardinale)
The most serious threat; bark lesions with resin flow lead to flagging and branch death. Remove infected limbs immediately, disinfecting tools. Avoid water stress and wounds to bark; no effective fungicide treatment exists post-infection.
Root rot in cultivated garden soils
Rich, moist garden soils are unsuitable and promote Phytophthora root rot. Symptoms include sudden wilting and crown death. Plant only in sharply drained, lean soils and avoid supplemental summer irrigation.
Poor performance outside native range
Modoc Cypress is poorly adapted to humid eastern or maritime climates where summers are warm and wet. It is best restricted to dry-summer, Mediterranean-climate gardens in the western US.
