Miniature African violet problems — and how to fix them
Miniature African violet (Saintpaulia 'Optimara Little Maya') is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Crown and stem rot
Miniature pots and reduced soil volume make overwatering risk higher. Always allow water to drain fully after bottom-watering and never leave the pot sitting in water for more than 30 minutes.
Asymmetric rosette
Uneven light causes the plant to lean and distort. Quarter-turn the pot 90° weekly under a fixed light source, or use a grow light directly overhead, to maintain a symmetrical rosette.
Spider mites
Dry indoor air encourages spider mites, visible as fine webbing on leaf undersides. Increase humidity, isolate affected plants, and treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap, avoiding wetting the blooms.
