Mexican Pinyon problems — and how to fix them
Mexican Pinyon (Pinus cembroides) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Root rot from wet soil
The leading cause of failure. Mexican pinyon cannot tolerate poorly drained or frequently watered ground; site it in gritty, free-draining soil and water sparingly.
Long wait for nuts
Trees often need 15-25 years or more before producing a meaningful cone crop. Plan for patience, and grow more than one tree for cross-pollination and better seed set.
