Mexican Hat Palm problems — and how to fix them
Mexican Hat Palm (Chamaedorea radicalis) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Brown frond tips
Caused by dry air, fluoride or salt build-up in tap water, or letting the soil fully dry. Use filtered or rainwater and keep the rootball evenly moist.
Spider mites
Dry indoor air invites mites that stipple and bronze the leaflets and leave fine webbing. Rinse fronds, raise humidity, and treat with insecticidal soap if needed.
Yellowing fronds
Usually overwatering and poor drainage, or nutrient deficiency. Let the top layer dry between waterings and feed with a palm fertiliser in the growing season.
Leaf scorch
Direct hot sun bleaches and crisps the fronds on this shade-loving palm. Move it to bright indirect light or dappled shade.
