Medinilla problems — and how to fix them
Medinilla (Medinilla scortechinii) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Root rot
The most common killer — caused by using a dense compost that stays wet. Always use an open bark-based mix and ensure the pot drains freely. If rot is caught early, remove from the pot, trim dead roots, allow to air-dry briefly, and repot into fresh medium.
Spider mites
Fine stippling on leaves and webbing on the undersides appear in hot, dry conditions. Increase humidity, rinse foliage regularly, and treat with insecticidal soap or a neem oil solution every 5–7 days.
Flower abort / failure to rebloom
Medinilla needs a slight dry-and-cool rest period in winter (reduce water and temperature to around 18 °C) to trigger the next flush of blooms. Keeping conditions uniformly warm and wet year-round often results in lush foliage but no flowers.
