Painted Masdevallia problems — and how to fix them
Painted Masdevallia (Masdevallia picturata) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Summer heat stress
The most critical challenge. Maximum day temperatures must not exceed 22°C. Shade, increase ventilation, and consider ice packs in the grow space during heatwaves.
Botrytis grey mould
Forms rapidly in still, humid air. Keep a low-speed fan running continuously and remove any affected tissue promptly with sterile scissors.
Root rot
Decomposed medium retains excess water, suffocating roots. Repot every 1-2 years and check for root health during potting.
Spider mites
More likely in warm, dry conditions. Inspect leaf undersides frequently and treat with insecticidal soap at first detection.
Flower abort
Buds abort if conditions fluctuate. Maintain stable temperature and humidity from bud formation to bloom opening.
Prevent painted masdevallia problems before they start
Most painted masdevallia issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
