Low Shield Plant problems — and how to fix them
Low Shield Plant (Homalomena humilis) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Yellowing leaves
Usually caused by overwatering or cold temperatures below 18°C (65°F). Check soil moisture and ensure the plant is not near a cold draught or air-conditioning vent.
Fungus gnats
Persistently moist soil attracts fungus gnat larvae that damage fine roots. Allow the soil surface to dry between waterings and apply a layer of coarse sand or grit to the surface as a deterrent.
Slow or no new growth
Typically a sign of insufficient warmth or light. Move to a slightly brighter (though still indirect) position and ensure temperatures stay consistently above 20°C (68°F).
Prevent low shield plant problems before they start
Most low shield plant issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
