Living Rock Cactus problems — and how to fix them
Living Rock Cactus (Ariocarpus fissuratus) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Root and crown rot
The single most common cause of death. Caused by excess moisture. Ensure the pot drains instantly and the soil never stays wet for more than a day.
Etiolation
Without adequate direct light the disc elongates into an unrecognisable elongated stem. A south-facing window or supplemental grow light is essential.
Mealybugs
Hide deep in the woolly areoles. Treat with isopropyl alcohol or systemic insecticide. Inspect at every watering.
