Obscura Wax Plant problems — and how to fix them
Obscura Wax Plant (Hoya obscura) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Root rot from overwatering
The most common killer. Mushy stems, an even yellowing and a sour smell from the soil signal it. Use a chunky, fast-draining mix, a pot with drainage, and water only once the top of the mix is dry.
Mealybugs and other sap-suckers
Mealybugs, scale and aphids cluster on leaf joints and undersides. Isolate the plant and wipe with diluted rubbing alcohol, then treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil, repeating weekly until clear.
Not blooming
Usually too little light, or the plant is too young. Provide several hours of bright light, leave spent flower spurs (peduncles) intact as they rebloom, and let it become slightly pot-bound to encourage flowering.
Even leaf yellowing
Foliage yellowing uniformly from the centre outward often means a nutrient shortage. Feed monthly through spring and summer with a diluted liquid fertiliser suited to succulents or flowering plants.
Fungal leaf spotting
Dark spots can appear when leaves stay wet or air is stagnant. Avoid misting, water at the soil rather than the foliage, and improve airflow around the plant.
Leaf drop or shrivelling
Caused by watering extremes or cold stress. Keep temperatures above about 15 C (60 F), away from cold draughts, and maintain a steady wet-then-dry watering rhythm.
