Holy Basil (Tulsi) problems — and how to fix them
Holy Basil (Tulsi) (Ocimum tenuiflorum) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Premature flowering (bolting)
Flower spikes appear fast in heat; pinch them out promptly to keep the plant producing tender, flavourful leaves.
Downy mildew
Yellowing upper leaf surfaces with greyish growth underneath. Improve airflow, avoid overhead watering, and remove affected leaves.
Cold damage
Leaves blacken below about 10°C. Bring indoors or protect when nights turn cool; it has no frost tolerance.
Leggy, weak growth
Caused by insufficient light or skipped pinching. Move to brighter light and harvest from the top to force bushier branching.
