Heterodox Sun Pitcher problems — and how to fix them
Heterodox Sun Pitcher (Heliamphora heterodoxa) is generally low-drama, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Slow growth or pitcher dieback from cold drafts
While more heat-tolerant than highland relatives, H. heterodoxa is sensitive to sudden cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C; keep it away from cold windows in winter and ensure night-time temperatures do not drop below 10°C for extended periods.
Root rot from standing water
Although the species tolerates more warmth, standing water deeper than 1–2 cm combined with warm temperatures creates anaerobic conditions that cause rapid root rot; keep the tray shallow and ensure the substrate has excellent drainage and good air gaps between fibres.
Prevent heterodox sun pitcher problems before they start
Most heterodox sun pitcher issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
