Hay-Scented Fern problems — and how to fix them
Hay-Scented Fern (Dennstaedtia punctilobula) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Aggressive spreading
Running rhizomes can overtake a border and smother smaller plants. Install a root barrier or grow it where vigorous colonising is wanted, such as dry shady banks.
Frond browning in dry sun
Bleached, crispy fronds mean too much sun or drought. Move to shade and improve soil moisture; the foliage is thin and dries quickly.
Early autumn dieback
