Hard Rush problems — and how to fix them
Hard Rush (Juncus inflexus) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Aggressive spreading and self-seeding
Hard Rush can spread vigorously by rhizomes and seeds freely around wet margins. Deadhead before seed matures and divide every 2–3 years to prevent it overwhelming smaller pond plants.
Drought collapse in dry summers
Prolonged dry periods cause stems to brown and collapse. Unlike Juncus effusus it has some drought tolerance in established clumps but still requires moist conditions. Water deeply or relocate to a wetter position.
Stem rust
Orange-brown rust pustules (Puccinia spp.) can appear on stems in humid conditions. Remove and bag affected stems; do not compost. Improving airflow by thinning the clump reduces recurrence.
