Four-stamen Tamarisk problems — and how to fix them
Four-stamen Tamarisk (Tamarix tetrandra) is generally low-drama, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
No flowers after incorrect pruning
Unlike summer-flowering tamarisks, T. tetrandra blooms on the previous year's wood; pruning in early spring removes the flowering wood and eliminates the year's display — prune only immediately after flowering has finished in late spring or early summer.
Dieback in waterlogged or chalk soils
Shallow chalk soil prevents adequate root development and causes chlorosis; heavy, waterlogged clay causes root anaerobia and decline — amend with grit and raise the planting area if drainage is suspect.
