English Thyme problems — and how to fix them

English Thyme (Thymus vulgaris 'English') is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.

Root rot (Phytophthora/Pythium)

Waterlogged or poorly draining soil causes roots to rot, leading to wilting, yellowing, and collapse even in apparently moist conditions. Prevention through excellent drainage is the only reliable solution; waterlogged plants rarely recover.

Woody, unproductive growth

Without annual pruning, thyme becomes increasingly woody and produces fewer new shoots. Cut stems back by one-third immediately after flowering, but never cut into old wood below the green growth, as bare woody stems do not regenerate.

Grey mould (Botrytis cinerea)

Fuzzy grey mould develops in the centre of dense clumps in damp, poorly ventilated conditions. Improve air circulation by thinning the plant's centre, and avoid overhead irrigation. Remove and destroy affected material.
