Elsanta Strawberry problems — and how to fix them
Elsanta Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa 'Elsanta') is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Grey mould (botrytis)
'Elsanta' is fairly susceptible to fruit rot in damp weather. Mulch with straw, space plants well, ventilate under cover and remove rotting berries immediately.
Powdery mildew
White coating on leaves with upward-curling, purple-tinged margins, common in 'Elsanta'. Improve airflow, avoid drought stress and remove badly affected leaves.
Vine weevil
Root-eating larvae cause sudden wilting and collapse, especially in containers. Apply nematode biological controls in late summer and inspect roots when potting on.
Slugs and birds taking fruit
Both quickly damage ripe berries. Use straw mats and slug barriers, and net plants as fruit colours, securing the netting at the base.
