Elephant Tree problems — and how to fix them

Elephant Tree (Bursera microphylla) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.

Frost damage

Branch tips are killed by even light frosts, and the trunk can be lost in hard freezes. In marginal climates, grow in a container and move indoors or into a frost-free greenhouse when temperatures threaten to drop below 2°C (35°F).

Overwatering / root rot

The leading cause of container plant failure. Root rot is swift and often fatal. Ensure the substrate is dry before each watering and never leave the pot in standing water. Reduce watering dramatically in winter even when temperatures remain warm.

False dieback / apparent death

The tree sheds its tiny leaflets during drought or cold and may appear dead. Scratch the bark to check for green tissue beneath; if green is present the plant is alive. Resume cautious watering in spring to trigger re-leafing.

Prevent elephant tree problems before they start

Most elephant tree issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
