Earth Star problems — and how to fix them
Earth Star (Cryptanthus bivittatus) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Browning, curling leaf edges
Low humidity is the usual cause. Raise humidity with a tray, humidifier or terrarium and avoid dry, draughty spots.
Crown rot
Water pooling in the tight centre rots the crown. Water the soil, not the rosette, and keep the mix free-draining.
Faded banding
Insufficient light flattens the pink and bronze stripes to plain green. Move to brighter indirect light.
Leaf scorch
Direct midday sun bleaches and crisps the foliage. Filter strong light or relocate.
