Debao Cycad problems — and how to fix them
Debao Cycad (Cycas debaoensis) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Identity fraud in trade
Cycas debaoensis is extremely rare in cultivation; the vast majority of plants sold under this name are actually Cycas multifrondis. If you have a confirmed true C. debaoensis, source documentation carefully and treat accordingly as a critically endangered species.
Root rot
Overwatering is the most common killer in cultivation. The combination of excess moisture and inadequate drainage causes rapid caudex and root rot. Ensure free-draining substrate and reduce watering in cooler months.
Manganese deficiency
New fronds emerge yellow or with interveinal chlorosis or tip necrosis — a classic cycad manganese deficiency. Apply foliar manganese sulphate spray and ensure soil pH is not above 7.0 which locks out manganese.
