Dazzler cosmos problems — and how to fix them

Dazzler cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus 'Dazzler') is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.

Stem collapse and flopping

Plants may fall over in rich soil, high nitrogen, or exposed windy sites. Pinch growing tips at 30 cm (12 in) to promote branching and shorter, bushier growth. Stake with bamboo canes if plants reach their maximum height.

Botrytis (grey mould)

Fluffy grey mould on stems and petals in wet, overcast weather. Remove affected tissue, thin planting density, and water at the base only. Fungicide treatments are rarely necessary for an annual.

Aphids

Colonies form on new growth and buds in early summer. Remove by hand, spray with insecticidal soap, or encourage natural predators. Ants protecting aphid colonies can be an early visual cue.

Prevent dazzler cosmos problems before they start

Most dazzler cosmos issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
