Cyperus papyrus problems — and how to fix them
Cyperus papyrus (Cyperus papyrus) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Browning, crispy umbels
The fine bract heads dry and brown when the plant runs short of water or humidity. Keep the soil constantly saturated and raise humidity; never let papyrus dry out.
Frost damage
Frost-tender — even a light frost blackens the foliage. Bring containers indoors to a bright, frost-free room before autumn cold in cool climates.
Weak, floppy stems
Tall stems flop under low light or excess nitrogen with too little sun. Give full, bright light and avoid over-feeding with high-nitrogen fertiliser.
Spider mites indoors
Dry indoor air over winter invites spider mites on the fine foliage. Maintain humidity, rinse the heads, and treat with insecticidal soap if webbing appears.
