Pale Coryphantha problems — and how to fix them

Pale Coryphantha (Coryphantha pallida) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.

Root rot

Most commonly caused by overwatering or water sitting in the crown. Allow complete drying and ensure pots drain freely.

Etiolation

Stretched, elongated growth with increased inter-tubercle spacing indicates inadequate light. Increase sun exposure gradually to avoid sunscald.

Mealybugs

Cottony masses between tubercles or at the soil line. Treat with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab.

Failure to bloom

Cool, dry winter dormancy at 8-12°C for at least 6-8 weeks promotes spring flowering.

Spine discolouration

Older spines naturally yellow or brown with age; this is cosmetic. New growth at the crown should retain the characteristic pale colouration.

Prevent pale coryphantha problems before they start

Most pale coryphantha issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
