Common blue violet problems — and how to fix them

Common blue violet (Viola sororia) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.

Aggressive self-seeding

Cleistogamous seed pods (formed without opening) produce abundant seed, which can lead to colonisation of lawns and garden beds. Deadhead spring flowers promptly to reduce seed set, or embrace the plant's spreading habit in naturalistic gardens.

Powdery mildew

White coating on leaves in late summer, particularly in dry or crowded conditions. Thin colonies to improve air circulation and water at the base. The plant rarely suffers lasting damage and new growth is typically clean.

Slug damage in spring
