Coastal Leucothoe problems — and how to fix them

Coastal Leucothoe (Leucothoe axillaris) is generally low-drama, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.

Leaf spot diseases (Cercospora / Anthracnose)

Brown or black spots with water-soaked or yellow margins appear in humid conditions with poor air circulation; avoid overhead irrigation, remove and destroy affected leaves, improve airflow by thinning, and apply copper-based fungicide if widespread.

Scale insects

Armoured or soft scale insects can colonise stems and leaf undersides, causing yellowing and sticky honeydew that promotes sooty mould; treat with horticultural oil in late winter before new growth emerges, or use systemic insecticide in severe infestations.
