Chinese witch hazel problems — and how to fix them

Chinese witch hazel (Hamamelis mollis) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.

Chlorosis on alkaline soils

Yellow leaves with green veins (interveinal chlorosis) indicate iron or manganese deficiency induced by high pH. Witch hazels require acid soil; apply sequestered iron and amend pH over time. Do not plant in chalky ground.

Slow establishment

Hamamelis mollis is notoriously slow-growing and resents root disturbance. Always plant container-grown specimens; avoid moving established plants. It may take 3–5 years to flower prolifically after planting.

Honey fungus susceptibility

Witch hazels can be susceptible to Armillaria (honey fungus) in soils with infected woody debris. There is no cure; remove and destroy affected plants and replace with resistant species in that spot.

Prevent chinese witch hazel problems before they start

Most chinese witch hazel issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
