Charming Puya problems — and how to fix them
Charming Puya (Puya venusta) is generally low-drama, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Winter root rot
Cold, wet soil in winter is the most common cause of plant loss. In the UK, container-grown plants should be moved under glass from October; garden plants benefit from a gravel mulch over the crown and a sheet of glass or polycarbonate overhead protection during prolonged wet spells.
Mealybugs at the leaf base
Mealybugs are attracted to the protected axils near the base of the rosette. Inspect regularly, especially during warmer months; treat localised infestations with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton bud and systemic insecticide for larger outbreaks.
