Basal / root rot
From overwatering or slow-draining soil; the base turns soft and brown. Water far less and switch to a grittier mix in a porous pot.
Etiolation (stretching, pale growth)
Caused by too little light; the body elongates and spines weaken. Move to the brightest available spot, acclimating gradually.
