Velvet Calathea problems — and how to fix them
Velvet Calathea (Calathea rufibarba) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Brown, crispy leaf tips and edges
Usually low humidity or mineral salts, fluoride, and chlorine in tap water. Raise humidity above 60% and switch to rainwater, distilled, or filtered water.
Curling or folding leaves outside of night-time prayer movement
A sign of underwatering, dry air, or excess fertiliser salts. Keep the mix evenly moist, boost humidity, and flush the soil to remove build-up.
Yellowing leaves and mushy stems
Typically overwatering and root rot. Let the top of the mix dry slightly between waterings, ensure the pot drains freely, and check for rot at the roots if problems persist.
