Burke's Raphionacme problems — and how to fix them
Burke's Raphionacme (Raphionacme burkei) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Caudex rot from excess winter moisture
Moisture around the caudex when dormant is the primary killer. Ensure complete dryness from leaf-fall through to the appearance of new shoots in spring. High humidity combined with cool temperatures accelerates rot dramatically.
Leaf drop during cold periods
Container-grown plants may drop leaves earlier than expected if temperatures fall below 15°C. This is normal if the plant is otherwise healthy. Ensure overwintering temperatures stay above 12°C and withhold water until spring growth resumes.
Root damage during repotting
Roots are sensitive and do not tolerate rough handling. Repot in very late winter or early spring just before growth resumes, disturbing the root system as little as possible. Use a slightly larger pot with fresh gritty mix.
Prevent burke's raphionacme problems before they start
Most burke's raphionacme issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
