Broad-Sepal Gongora problems — and how to fix them
Broad-Sepal Gongora (Gongora latisepala) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Yellowing lower leaves
Natural sequential leaf drop on old pseudobulbs is normal and not harmful. If new growth also yellows, check for overwatering, poor drainage, or root rot. Ensure the bark mix has not broken down into a water-retentive mush that suffocates roots.
Flower spike failure
Without a cool, dry rest in winter — temperatures dropping to 12–15°C and watering reduced substantially for 4–6 weeks — Gongora latisepala may not initiate pendulous flower spikes. Ensure plants experience this seasonal differential annually.
Mealybugs in root zone
White, cottony masses at the base of pseudobulbs or among roots indicate mealybugs. Treat with diluted isopropyl alcohol, neem-oil drench, or a systemic insecticide appropriate for orchids. Remove affected medium and inspect roots during treatment.
Prevent broad-sepal gongora problems before they start
Most broad-sepal gongora issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
