Black Olive Bonsai problems — and how to fix them
Black Olive Bonsai (Bucida buceras) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Cold sensitivity
Strictly frost-tender; temperatures below about 10°C cause leaf drop and dieback. Keep warm and bring indoors before cool weather.
Leaf-tip browning
From dry air, salt build-up, or erratic watering. Raise humidity, flush the soil occasionally, and water more evenly.
Gall mites (Eriophyid)
Black olive is notably prone to mite-induced twig galls and witches'-broom growth. Prune out affected tips and treat with miticide or horticultural oil.
Weak, leggy shoots
