Bee Orchid problems — and how to fix them
Bee Orchid (Ophrys apifera) is generally low-drama, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Tuber rot from waterlogging
The most common cause of plant loss in cultivation; ensure the planting site has excellent drainage and never allow water to pool around the tubers. In heavy soils, plant on a slight slope or raise the bed with grit.
Loss to competitive grasses
Vigorous grasses quickly shade out rosettes in fertile or undisturbed sward; mow or strim the surrounding turf in August–September after seed is shed to suppress grass growth and keep the orchid habitat open.
Prevent bee orchid problems before they start
Most bee orchid issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
