Banana passionfruit problems — and how to fix them
Banana passionfruit (Passiflora antioquiensis) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Failure to flower in warm conditions
P. antioquiensis requires cool nights (below 16°C) to initiate flowering. In warm lowland gardens or heated rooms, it grows vigorously but rarely blooms. A cool conservatory or alpine house is more suitable.
Red spider mite
Warm, dry air encourages infestations visible as fine webbing and pale mottling. Raise humidity, remove heavily infested leaves, and apply predatory mites (Phytoseiulus persimilis) or neem oil.
Stem die-back in cold, wet winters
Though more frost-tolerant than most passionflowers, prolonged wet cold at roots causes stem die-back. Mulch the root zone heavily in autumn and ensure container plants are in frost-free conditions below 3°C.
