Ashanti Blood problems — and how to fix them
Ashanti Blood (Mussaenda erythrophylla) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Bract colour fading
Insufficient light is the most common cause of pale or washed-out red bracts. Move to a position with full sun. Also ensure consistent feeding with a potassium-balanced fertiliser; potassium deficiency can dull bract pigmentation. Over-shaded plants also tend to produce fewer bracts overall.
Leaf drop and dormancy confusion
Mussaenda erythrophylla is deciduous and naturally sheds leaves in winter or during drought stress. This is normal, not a sign of pest or disease. Maintain warmth above 15 °C and reduce watering; new growth resumes reliably in spring when temperatures and light levels rise.
Aphids on new growth
Soft, succulent new shoot tips attract aphid colonies, causing curled leaves and sticky honeydew residue. Dislodge with a strong water spray. Apply neem oil or insecticidal soap to new growth and undersides of leaves, repeating every 5–7 days until clear.
