Angelica problems — and how to fix them

Angelica (Angelica archangelica) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.

Premature bolting

Heat and drought stress push the plant to flower and set seed early, after which it dies. Keep it cool, shaded, and consistently moist to prolong its leafy years.

Aphids on flower stems

The lush hollow stems and umbels attract aphids. Blast off with water or tolerate them, as the flowers also draw beneficial predatory insects and pollinators.

Leaf scorch in full sun

Broad leaves brown at the margins under hot direct sun and dry air. Site in partial shade and mulch the root zone to keep it cool.

Powdery mildew

Crowded, poorly ventilated plantings in late summer can develop powdery mildew on the foliage. Space plants well and avoid overhead watering late in the day.

Prevent angelica problems before they start

Most angelica issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
