Chinese Cardamom problems — and how to fix them

Chinese Cardamom (Amomum villosum) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.

Brown leaf tips

The most common complaint, caused by insufficient humidity or fluoride in tap water. Use filtered or rainwater and raise humidity to above 65%.

No flowering indoors

Flowers emerge at soil level and require mature rhizome clumps with good root mass. Pot-bound plants in bright conditions often flower; very dark or underpotted plants rarely do.

Root rot

Caused by waterlogged, poorly drained soil. Ensure the pot has drainage holes and the medium never becomes anaerobic.

Scale insects

Check cane joints for brown scale. Treat by wiping with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab and applying a systemic insecticide if the infestation is severe.

Sluggish growth

Usually a temperature or light issue. Below 18°C the plant stalls. Supplement with a grow light in winter if natural light is poor.

Prevent chinese cardamom problems before they start

Most chinese cardamom issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
