Golden Trumpet problems — and how to fix them
Golden Trumpet (Allamanda cathartica) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Few or no flowers
Almost always too little light — Allamanda needs full sun (6+ hours). Move to the brightest spot and feed with a bloom fertiliser through the growing season.
Leggy, sparse growth
Insufficient light plus lack of pruning. Cut back hard in late winter/early spring (by up to half) to force bushier growth and more flowering wood.
Spider mites and mealybugs
Common in dry indoor air, especially overwintering. Raise humidity, inspect leaf undersides, and treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil; NC State notes no major disease problems otherwise.
Yellowing or dropping leaves
Often cold stress (below ~16 C / 60 F) or overwatering with poor drainage. Keep it warm, ensure the pot drains freely, and ease off water in winter.
Skin irritation when handling
The milky sap irritates skin and eyes. Wear gloves and long sleeves when pruning, avoid touching your face, and wash up afterwards.
Bud drop or stalled growth in winter
Normal semi-dormancy in cool, short days. Reduce watering and stop feeding; resume regular care as light and warmth return in spring.
