Agave havardiana problems — and how to fix them

Agave havardiana (Agave havardiana) is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.

Root and crown rot

Caused by overwatering or a peaty, water-holding mix. Keep the medium gritty, water only when bone-dry, and never let water sit in the rosette.

Etiolation (stretching)

Pale, elongated, leaning leaves signal too little light. Move to the sunniest position available; the stretched growth won't recover but new growth will tighten.

Agave snout weevil

Larvae bore into the core, causing sudden collapse of the rosette. Inspect the base, remove and destroy affected plants, and avoid overwatering which attracts the pest.

Spine injury

The rigid terminal spine can cause deep puncture wounds to people and pets. Site away from walkways or trim the spine tip if needed.

Prevent agave havardiana problems before they start

Most agave havardiana issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
