Adams Elderberry problems — and how to fix them
Adams Elderberry (Sambucus nigra 'Adams') is generally forgiving once you match its basics, but a few issues come up again and again. Here is what each one looks like, why it happens, and the fix.
Elderberry borer (Desmocerus palliatus)
A metallic-winged beetle whose larvae bore into the crown and canes, causing cane wilting and dieback. Cut and destroy affected canes at ground level. Maintain plant vigour with adequate water and fertility.
Powdery mildew
White coating on leaves in warm, dry periods. Generally does not affect fruit quality but weakens the plant over multiple seasons. Improve air circulation through annual pruning and thin planting spacing.
Bird competition for fruit
Birds, particularly starlings, strip ripe elderberries very quickly. Net clusters as they begin to ripen if the harvest is a priority, or accept sharing the crop as a wildlife benefit.
Prevent adams elderberry problems before they start
Most adams elderberry issues are care-mismatch, not bad luck. Dial in the basics:
