Zygopetalum — 12 species
Part of the Orchids family (Orchidaceae)
Zygopetalum is a small genus of sympodial orchids native to South America, admired for richly fragrant, long-lasting blooms in violet, burgundy, and green. Grow them in bright, indirect light — an east- or west-facing window is ideal — and water thoroughly, then allow the potting mix to nearly dry before watering again, roughly every two to three days in summer and less in winter. High humidity above 50% is essential. Toxicity varies across species, so check each individual Zygopetalum before bringing one into a home with cats or dogs.

Zygopetalum — frequently asked questions
Are Zygopetalum plants toxic to cats and dogs?
Most Zygopetalum are pet-safe. Of the 12 Zygopetalum species we cover, 11 are non-toxic on the ASPCA list and 1 carry a toxic or mildly-toxic rating. Even so, confirm the individual species before trusting it around pets.
How much light do Zygopetalum plants need?
Most Zygopetalum do best in bright indirect light. If yours stretches toward the window or loses its variegation it wants more light; scorched or bleached leaves mean it is getting too much direct sun.
Are Zygopetalum easy to care for?
Zygopetalum are moderate to grow: the main requirement is a genuinely bright spot out of harsh midday sun. Get the light right and the rest of their care follows.
How many Zygopetalum varieties are there?
Growli's care library covers 12 Zygopetalum species and varieties — browse them all above. They share a similar light, water and soil pattern, so once you learn one Zygopetalum, the rest follow closely.
