Zantedeschia — 18 species
Zantedeschia, the calla lilies, are elegant rhizomatous plants bearing bold, funnel-shaped spathes in colours ranging from white and cream to the deep purple of Black Star and the vivid tones of Captain Safari and Captain Violetta. They grow best in bright, direct light close to a south-facing window and prefer evenly moist, humus-rich soil that drains well; let the surface dry slightly between waterings to avoid root rot. All Zantedeschia species are toxic to cats and dogs — insoluble calcium oxalates cause oral burning, drooling, and vomiting — so keep them away from pets entirely.
