Xanthosoma is a genus of bold tropical aroids from the Americas, grown for their large arrow- or shield-shaped leaves in species such as Xanthosoma sagittifolium and the purple-stemmed Xanthosoma violaceum. They perform best in bright indirect light with consistently moist, well-draining soil and high humidity — bright direct sun scorches the foliage. All Xanthosoma species are toxic to cats and dogs: like related aroids they contain insoluble calcium oxalates that cause oral burning, excessive drooling, and vomiting if ingested.
