Vitis, the true grapevines, are vigorous, deciduous woody climbers grown worldwide for fruit and ornamental coverage. They are sun-demanding, needing at least six hours of direct light daily, and prefer moderate, consistent watering with good drainage; established vines tolerate brief dry spells but fruit quality drops under stress. Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscat, and Fox grape all fall here. All Vitis species are toxic to cats and dogs: the fruit, juice, raisins, and related products can cause acute kidney injury and are a veterinary emergency — keep grapevines completely away from pets regardless of variety.
