Genus guide
Tulipa — 32 species
Tulipa is the classic spring-blooming bulb genus, encompassing everything from common garden tulips and waterlily types to tall Emperor cultivars. Plant bulbs in autumn in a full-sun position with free-draining, neutral to slightly acidic soil, watering in after planting and then only during dry spells; bulbs rot in waterlogged ground. All Tulipa species are toxic to cats and dogs — the highest concentration of the irritants tulipalin A and B sits in the bulbs, but all parts carry risk. Keep bulbs stored securely and planted beds away from pets; contact your vet immediately if ingestion is suspected.
