Genus guide
Thymus — 27 species
Thymus is a genus of low-growing, aromatic Mediterranean herbs and sub-shrubs — including Common Thyme (T. vulgaris), Lemon Thyme (T. citriodorus), and Creeping Thyme (T. serpyllum) — used widely in cooking and ornamental planting. All species demand full sun and sharply drained, lean soil; they are notably drought-tolerant once established but will rot in waterlogged conditions. Regular trimming after flowering keeps plants compact. The ASPCA lists common thyme as non-toxic to cats and dogs, and this safety profile holds across the genus, making Thymus a pet-friendly herb garden staple.
