Syringa — 12 species
Syringa is a genus of hardy, long-lived deciduous shrubs and small trees celebrated for their dense, fragrant flower panicles in spring. Cultivars range from compact forms like Dwarf Korean Lilac (Syringa meyeri 'Palibin') to stately trees such as Japanese Tree Lilac 'Ivory Silk'; all perform best in full sun with well-drained soil and moderate, consistent moisture during the growing season. Toxicity varies by species: most true Syringa are considered non-toxic to cats and dogs by the ASPCA, but the common name 'Persian lilac' is also applied to Melia azedarach, which is toxic — always verify the exact species before buying.
