Sambucus — 15 species
Sambucus (elderberry) is a fast-growing genus of multi-stemmed shrubs and small trees — cultivars such as 'Nova', 'York', and 'Adams' are prized for their heavy fruit clusters, while ornamental selections add bold foliage to the garden. Elderberries thrive in full sun to partial shade and prefer consistently moist, organically rich soil, though established plants tolerate brief dry spells. All parts of Sambucus are toxic to cats and dogs; the bark, leaves, unripe berries, and roots contain cyanogenic glycosides and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and serious illness if ingested.
