Genus guide
Quercus — 22 species
Quercus is a vast genus of deciduous and evergreen trees — including Burr Oak, White Oak, Swamp White Oak, and Chinkapin Oak — prized as landscape specimens for their spreading canopies, wildlife value, and remarkable longevity across USDA hardiness zones 3–9. Oaks thrive in full sun and deep, well-drained soil; established trees are highly drought-tolerant. All Quercus species are toxic to cats and dogs (ASPCA-listed); acorns, leaves, and bark contain tannins that cause gastrointestinal upset and, with repeated ingestion, potential kidney damage.
