Genus guide
Pyrus — 32 species
Pyrus encompasses the true pears — fruiting trees and ornamental varieties such as Bartlett, Bosc, Hosui Asian pear, and European pear — grown outdoors in full sun with moderate, deep watering once established and excellent drainage. The seeds, stems, and wilting leaves contain cyanogenic glycosides (amygdalin), which can release cyanide upon ingestion. All parts of the Pyrus plant are considered toxic to cats and dogs; keep fallen fruit and pruned material away from pets and seek veterinary advice immediately if ingestion is suspected.
