Genus guide
Pinus — 38 species
Pines are iconic conifers prized for architectural silhouettes and fine-textured needles. Japanese Black Pine and Scots Pine prefer full sun and well-drained, slightly acidic soil; Japanese White Pine tolerates partial shade. Water young specimens regularly, but established pines are drought-tolerant. Toxicity varies by species: some pines — particularly Norfolk Island Pine (a separate genus but often confused) — are harmful to cats, while true Pinus species carry low-to-moderate risk. Always verify the specific species before placing pines near pets.
